Focus of Centre:

The Retail Department involves practical training in a fully functional Farm Shop. It provides students, trainees, staff and outside customers with exactly the same services as any similar outlet. It is a resource within the college where functional skills, key skills, vocational skills and Independent Living Skills are delivered to the students in a realistic working environment linked to the retail sector. It offers specialist retail training within the practical, operational location of Young’s Farm Shop. Students are involved in a wide variety of retail related work in the vocational setting, from deliveries, merchandising and display, to money handling, and customer service. It provides college Independent Living Skills groups with the facilities necessary for them to purchase the items for their sessions.

The Centre enables a range of learners to develop a combination of IT skills and knowledge in communication, learning and social inclusion in preparation for independent living, further education and employment. It provides opportunities for the assessment of knowledge evidence linked with vocational training in preparation for open employment. Learners working towards a variety of accredited awards are able to research information and gather evidence for NPTC/NVQ accreditation. Learners on a non-accredited route have opportunities to develop communication, independent self directed learning and functional skills. Students learn to use the computers and other specialist equipment and training is provided in basic computer skills. All this takes place in a retail environment.
