Focus of Centre:

National Star College Karten CTEC Centre is an open learning centre for work based learning and training. Part of the CTEC centre is an Information Technology access assessment suite in which students try and test a range of access technology

The Clients

Students on a residential vocational course of up to three years, with a range of physical disabilities including cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophies, spina bifida, associated learning difficulties and sensory impairments.
During the term time breaks the CTEC Centre is used as an external training centre for CPD training for the local Care sector on a range of mandatory training from safeguarding to moving and handling.
Staff who are taking teaching qualifications as part of the new QTLS accreditation use the bank of teacher support resources in the library and use the college Moodle VLE in the CTEC centre.

The Technology

The Centre boasts a range of access technology, 15 computer work stations with large flat screen monitors, a revolving Kardex library accessible by wheelchair users.

Assistive Technology

A range of access technology from screen readers, The Grid, Voice recognition software, to a range of input devices which include infra red switches, keyboards, tracker balls, joysticks and eye gaze technology.

Opening hours:

The CTEC Centre is open in the evenings until 8pm for self study and is used by staff and students.

Any other information

Preparation for Employment, Personal Development and World of Work Enterprises use the centre – These companies include Shredding for Bedding (a company producing animal bedding which won the regional Employability Plus Dragons Den sponsorship for 2009) and Horticulture and Craft Based Enterprises. These companies received Young Enterprise Gloucestershire’s highly commended award 2009.
From September 2009 Creative and Performing Arts, Information Technology and Sport Departments will be running mini companies linked to Work Preparation as part of their vocational learning programmes.
