ICT for education and leisure for young people with learning difficulties and disablities

The Clients

The College provides education and training for young people and adults with complex learning difficulties and/or disabilities. They have the full range of learning difficulties and disabilities, including complex medical needs and autistic spectrum conditions

The Technology

13 workstations; electronic whiteboard; colour CCTV

Assistive Technology

Full range of alternative input methods including Grid2; Dragon Naturally Speaking; Dolphin Lunar and Easy Tutor/Student; switch software; etc.

Staffing

An average of 5 or 6 staff at any given time, drawn from the total of 110 in all.

Opening hours

33 hours weekly during term time and 10 INSET days

Currently developing a switch progression package which we could share expertise on.

Any other information

Bridge College is the only specialist day college of its kind in the North-West of England and one of a few in the U.K. It enables students to live at home but to have access to the highly specialised educational programmes usually only found in a residential college.
The centre is hugely popular with the students and staff and has been immensely helpful in developing out ILT provision.
The College mission is “to create an inclusive learning environment where young people are empowered to make the transition to adulthood by maximizing independence and communication”. Staff attribute equal value and importance to learning not geared to employment.
