Services/focus of the Karten Centre

We provide 1 to 1 training to visually impaired people, aged 16 and up, with assisstive technology. Taking a goal based approach, working with smart phones, tablets, PCs and various assisstive technology solutions to suit the client. We also offer advice on technology pertaining to accessability, general useage with the aim of increasing VI people's independence and participation in wider society.

Clients

Visually impaired people of all ages from around the Bristol area or near by. They may have other health issues or disabilities alongside a visual impairment.

Disabilities

Visual impairment, + any or none of other disabilities or issues.

Technology used in the Karten Centre

Desktop PCs, laptops, smart phones, tablets.
A range of assisstive software. Screen readers, magnification solutions, talking typing tutor software.

Assistive Technology

Apple Iphones, Ipads, Android smart phones, tablets. Windows 7 and 10 desktop. Appe Mac OSX.

Voiceover, Zoom, Talkback, Android magnification, NVDA, JAWS, Windows magnifier, Zoomtext, Dolphin Guide, Window Eye, Azabat Typing Tutor.

Karten Centre Staff

1 paid staff member. Up to 8 volunteers.

The centre is open to clients Tue, Wed Thu, 10:00 - 16:00.

Services offered to the Network

Vision North Somerset based in Weston Super Mare, who have their own AT training suite.

Partnerships

RNIB Group's Online Today project is closely related. The broad aim of which is to increase knowledge and participation of internet based services, for leisure, work, research and social engagement amongst VI people and their famlies.
