Carnegie College

Date centre established:

September 2006

Focus of Centre:

The Centre enables enhanced support for all learners enrolled on Aspire Centre college programmes (i.e. Additional Support Programmes in Real Environments). Appropriate staffing and resources support students in the achievement of ICT related skills/qualifications at levels ranging from non certificated introductory to Intermediate level SQA and ASDAN qualifications.
The Centre also assists learners to gain essential skills to enable progression to vocational training or employment. It is used effectively as a simulated administration placement with “real” contracts being carried out for staff, student’s families, external businesses and college departments. This ranges from printing leaflets to designing and producing invitations, information flyers, Christmas cards etc. using multimedia resources.

The Clients

The Aspire client group are predominately learners with a diverse range of general learning disabilities and learners with physical disabilities requiring support in ICT. The client group varies with each academic session and we strive to offer differentiated resources and learning styles /methods to meet individual needs.
The students attending the Centre can be full-time (on either vocational or lifeskills programmes), part-time academic or vocational, day release from secondary schools participating in a transitional course in college or adults on very part-time leisure programmes. In total, approximately 70 learners use the Karten CTEC Centre every week.

The Technology

There are 12 student PC’s and one staff PC connected to a projector and electronic white board.

Assistive Technology

We have a range of assistive resources and technology ranging from ergonomic keyboards to Tracker ball mice.
Recently, all PC’s have had Texthelp installed. This has enabled a substantial number of students to work independently as the software can be set to individual preferences and needs for both class work and assessments.
The Karten Centre enabled us to put appropriate resources in place to assist the learning of learners with visual and hearing impairments. The staff went a step further, and with the clever use of web cams and mobile technology, the present hearing impaired learners have produced supportive lesson materials in BSL for future students.

Staffing

There are 5 core academic staff and 4 support staff work within the centre
