Karten Network Chair’s Reflections – Spring 2023

Posted on April 21, 2023 at 8:06 am.

Arwyn Jones

A very warm spring welcome to the latest edition of the Karten Network Newsletter. We’re already well into 2023 and Spring is definitely upon us, with bountiful spring flowers appearing, some warmth in the Sun (well when it appears), and perhaps an urge to do some spring cleaning!!.

As ever there are some fantastic stories in this edition that demonstrate the impact and brilliant work being done by Karten Centres across the UK and Israel. Ian Karten whose vision and generosity started all this, will I’m sure have been immensely proud to see how the Network has evolved.

The Trustees of the Ian Karten Charitable Trust who make the funding decisions on applications from Centres, follow closely how those decisions translate into life changing activities. Whilst funding is still challenging due to the volatility of investment markets from which their monies are drawn, they are totally committed to continue supporting Centres and the Network along with seeking out other innovations that can make a difference to those living with a range of disabilities.

Returning to the Spring Cleaning theme, we as Karten Network will be moving forward as a newly approved Charitable organisation. When the Trust was formed many years ago, they decided to establish Karten Network Limited to oversee the operational aspects of the Network. Circumstances over the years have evolved and we agreed with the Trust in 2022 to do a short review of Governance given that the status of being a limited company no longer seemed the best way to operate.

We therefore with the support of the Trust, applied to the Charity Commission last autumn to convert Karten Network to charitable status. I’m delighted that this was recently approved by the Charity Commission and Karten Network will hereon operate as a charity. From a day-to-day perspective Network members will see no difference and we will be working closely alongside the Trust to continue developing the Network.

Over the coming months we as Karten Network will be updating our working practices to reflect charitable status and developing an ambitious forward looking strategy that will aim to broaden our participation in research and development projects that complement the needs and work of the Centres, and champions the role of assistive technology in being so transformative in the lives of many people. In turn this may well open up new opportunities for Centres to get involved as many have over the last 3 years in the Nuvoic project in which Karten Network is the UK partner.

In summary Karten Network is entering an exciting new phase and the Network Board is eager to fully exploit the potential of our newly acquired charitable status to build on the network achievements to date seeking out new partners, innovation and investment that will benefit Karten Network and its members as technology itself continues to evolve.

I hope you enjoy this newsletter and we’d love to receive your contributions for our future editions.

Best wishes,

Arwyn Jones

Network Development Coordinator’s Update – Winter 2021

Hello Everyone!  Welcome to our first newsletter of 2021.  As we are in Lockdown 3 and many of you are supporting your service users remotely, or have blended models in place, I am going to focus on sources of support for our Karten Centres and members of our wider Karten Network.  This is a reminder of things that have been shared previously, but many of the resources have been updated in recent weeks.

Support and resources

There are many ways that the Karten Network and others can help you so please don’t be shy, reach out to us and we’ll be delighted to help.  The Karten team contact details can be found at the end of the newsletter.

Karten Centres are eligible to access bespoke support from TechAbility so why not contact the team and find out more.  During the early stages of lockdown we developed a home learning/support resource on our website which is worth a look – https://karten-network.org.uk/home-learning-support/   Around the same time Natspec developed a website to support home learning – https://natspec.org.uk/resources/home-learning/  and TechAbility has a section to support remote learning https://www.techability.org.uk/resources/aiding-learning-from-home/

For Karten Centres that are not educational providers, don’t be put off by the use of the term “learning”, many of the resources transfer perfectly into independent living, day care and residential care contexts, there really is something for everyone.

Funding and applications

Many of you have been asking me about applying for Karten funding.  Unfortunately, the pandemic has had an impact on the amount of funding that can be allocated to Centres.  I will keep you informed about future funding opportunities.  In the meantime, I urge you to remain closely involved with the Network as there are many more benefits of engagement in addition to direct financial support.

Ian Karten’s Charitable Trust website

In December 2020, the Trust launched a website to celebrate Ian’s life and legacy.  You can also follow the Trust on Twitter @IanKarten.

Centenary Video

The students and staff at New Bridge Group produced a Centenary Video to mark Ian’s 100thyear.

Thank you so much to the students and staff at New Bridge Group for filming the activities in Karten Centres and for producing the video.

Thanks to the following organisations for participating in this project:

  • Bridge College
  • BuzzHub St Helens CDP
  • The New Bridge Multi Academy Trust
  • Langdon College
  • The Hamlet

That’s all from me.  I hope you stay safe and well and I look forward to being in touch with you soon.

An Autonomous vehicle parked on a hill overlooking a scenic valley

Karten Centres have been invited to be involved in an exciting project assessing the inclusive design and functionality of Westfield’s Connected Autonomous Vehicles.  Four of our Centres are currently involved in the project.  Due to the lockdown, activity is limited to remote activity and virtual reality, but once restrictions are eased Westfield will be dropping vehicles off at Karten Centres and participants will have the opportunity to experience the vehicles first-hand.  This is a fabulous opportunity for people with disabilities to input into the design process.  Take a look at the Westfield’s Connected Autonomous Vehicles website and the YouTube clip.

Karten Network and Voiceitt logos with two people using the voiceitt app in the background

The Karten Network has continued working on the Nuvoic Project our collaboration with specialist app developer Voiceitt, aiming to improve access to speech recognition technology for people who have speech difficulties. Voiceitt’s app supports people who want to communicate using their own voice but have difficulty being understood by unfamiliar people, or who want to use their voice for smart home control but can’t access mainstream technologies. The Karten Network is leading on user involvement and testing in the UK.

Updates

Since our last newsletter, we’ve been working with several of our partner organisations to recruit individuals to take part in the project, and we’re delighted that we now have participants from Beaumont College in Lancaster, Cedar Foundation in Northern Ireland, Enable Ireland, Hill House care home in Sandbach (Leonard Cheshire), Homefield College in Leicestershire, National Star in Cheltenham, The Grange Centre and Young Epilepsy in Surrey, as well as some individuals who’ve contacted us directly. We’d like to say a huge thank you to all of our participants and partner organisations for your contribution so far, especially in such challenging circumstances!

In December, Voiceitt announced their collaboration with Amazon to make Alexa accessible for users with impaired speech, and in January were awarded a ‘Best of Innovation’ award in the Accessibility category by the Consumer Technology Association. Congratulations Voiceitt!

We’ve also recently published our new Nuvoic project web pages, check these out for information and updates about the project.

Get involved!

We’re still recruiting participants to test the Voiceitt app, especially the new Smart Home mode which gives integrated control of an Amazon Echo smart speaker. We’re also looking to recruit people with impaired speech who are willing to donate voice recordings to help develop Voiceitt’s technology.

We’re keen to work with new partner organisations who support people with impaired speech, and we have funding available to reimburse organisations for time spent supporting the project. We can also work directly with individuals, family members and carers to support participation, and we offer vouchers, as well as free use of Voiceitt during participation and for six months afterwards, to thank participants for their contribution. Please see our project web pages for details of what’s involved.

Get in touch!

We would love to hear from you if you, your organisation or someone you know may be interested in taking part, or if you’d like more information. Please email our project co-ordinator: liz@karten-network.org.uk, or you can find more information and get in touch via our project web pages.

Welcome to our Autumn 2020 Newsletter

Arwyn Jones

Welcome to our Autumn 2020 Newsletter from Arwyn Jones, Chair of the Karten Network Board

First and foremost I sincerely hope you, colleagues, friends, family and service users are keeping safe and well during these unprecedented times.

We entered 2020 but 10 months ago – a sparkling new decade – with high hopes and aspirations. A decade where the pace of technological innovation and creativity would continue to accelerate and bring huge potential and life changing benefits to the community that Karten Centres support across the UK and Israel. Who could have known then how the year would evolve.

Indeed reflecting back on past issues of the Karten newsletter and how all of the Centres have evolved over the years, applying technology with innovation flair, passion, and a commitment to making a positive difference, one can only feel proud and humbled by what has and continues to be achieved.

This year we were hoping to celebrate what would have been Ian Karten’s 100th birthday, at an event in Birmingham – sadly, but correctly, we have had to postpone that event. But that does not detract from the amazing work being done. Ian would have been immensely proud at how his vision has grown, and reaches so many people in a positive way.  His foresight, energy and passion to make a difference is a legacy of life changing support and services that has already benefitted 1000’s over the last 40 years or so, and with what has been developed, will continue for many years to come.

We all know how immensely challenging COVID-19 has been during 2020, and all the current indicators point to that remaining to be the case for the foreseeable future. Notwithstanding that, it is truly heartening to see how organisations across the Karten Network have adapted to face these challenges, seeking to ensure that they can provide the optimum services and support in a safe yet accessible way.

The Karten Trustees who fund the Network have also had to adapt, not least because revenues into the Trust have been adversely affected, and will likely continue to be so for some time. Despite that the Trustees have committed to continue to support the Network through funding for specific applications, but unfortunately a need for more prioritisation will mean that not all applications can be supported.

However, whilst immensely important, funding is but one feature of a Network such as Karten. One of the core strengths of any Network is the willingness and ability to share and learn from each other – harnessing the creativity and can-do approach that is so evident. Karten I feel is a vanguard in this respect. I would encourage all our centres to continue with that spirit of sharing and collaboration and celebrating the positive impact we are having.

Please take time to read this issue of our newsletter, and also to capture and share with us your stories so that they can appear in future issues. In the meantime please continue to stay safe whilst doing the amazing work you do.

Best Wishes

Arwyn

Nuvoic project

Lady in wheelchair, with iPad mounted in front of here, using the voiceitt app

In our last newsletter we announced our involvement in the Nuvoic Project, a collaboration with specialist app developer Voiceitt, which aims to improve access to speech recognition technology for people who have non-standard or dysarthric speech. Voiceitt are developing an app for people who want to communicate using their own voice but have difficulty being understood by unfamiliar people, or who want to use their voice for smart home control but can’t access mainstream technologies. You can see video clips here of Voiceitt in action for communication and smart home control.

The Karten Network is leading on user involvement and testing in the UK. Since June, we’ve been working hard to produce resources, we’ve received ethical approval for the planned work with participants, and now we’re pleased to announce that recruitment is open and we’re in the process of enrolling our first testers at The Grange Centre in Surrey!

We’re currently looking for people who would like to get involved in testing the app, particularly the new Smart Home feature which gives integrated control of an Amazon Echo smart speaker. We’re looking for people who:

  • Are aged 16+
  • Have ‘non-standard’ speech, sometimes not understood by others
  • Want to use speech to communicate
  • Are interested in technology
  • Can use a tablet or phone by touchscreen
  • Can read in-app instructions
  • Can understand what’s involved & agree to take part

The app runs on an iPad or iPhone, we can provide testing kit on loan as needed. We will ask participants to choose around 15 commands or phrases which will be useful to them in daily life, to train the app to recognise how they say these and then to practise using them over 3-4 months. At the end of this time we’d like participants to tell us about how easy or difficult they found it to train and use the app, how well it worked for them, what they liked and what could be improved. Participants who complete the feedback interview will receive a £20 app store voucher as a thank you for their time and effort, and a further 6 months’ free use of the Voiceitt app.

As well as working directly with individuals, family members and carers we hope to work with partner organisations such as our Karten Centre hosts and others offering services and support to people with impaired speech. We have funding available to reimburse local support teams for help to recruit and work with participants. We’re delighted that The Grange Centre in Surrey will be taking part and we look forward to working closely with them and other partners in future!

We would love to hear from you if you, your organisation or someone you know may be interested in taking part, or if you would like more information. Please email our project co-ordinator: liz@karten-network.org.uk and look out for our Nuvoic project web pages, available soon, linked from the Karten Network website.

Nuvoic

The Karten Network is very pleased to begin work this Summer on the Nuvoic project, which aims to improve access to voice recognition technologies for people who have dysarthric or unclear speech. Our project partner Voiceitt produces a specialist voice recognition app, designed to be used by people who have dysarthric speech and who are unable to use mainstream voice-controlled systems.

We want to recruit participants who would be willing to provide voice samples to extend Voiceitt’s database of English-accented dysarthric speech, which will help improve the performance of their recognition systems. Voiceitt are also working to develop new and existing functions for their apps. Potential uses include voice output, to help users to communicate more easily with people who are unfamiliar with their speech, and control of other voice-driven technologies such as the Amazon Alexa and other smart-home and environmental control systems. There are also plans to develop a voice-controlled online shopping app.

We are looking for participants aged 16 or over to join this exciting project, to test these apps and provide feedback to Voiceitt on how they could be improved. The apps give written instructions to the user, so some literacy is needed. If you would like to get involved with this project or would like to find out more, please contact Liz Howarth who is the project co-ordinator for the Karten Network: liz@karten-network.org.uk.

We would be very grateful for any help from colleagues in our Karten Centres to help us to publicise this project and make contact with any potential participants. The Voiceitt apps currently run on Apple devices but Android versions are planned for the future. Participants using their own iPhone or iPad will benefit most easily but some funding is available to provide testing kit where needed.

Welcome to Liz Howarth

Liz Howarth

Liz Howarth has joined the Karten Network in June as Project Co-ordinator for the Nuvoic project, which aims to improve access to voice-recognition technologies for people who have dysarthric or unclear speech. Liz has recently worked as a health researcher at the University of Manchester, contributing to several trials and evaluation studies, and has previously worked in learning and communication support and assistive technology roles at Beaumont College in Lancaster.

There, she provided technical and learning support to students using voice output communication aids, and through the Wheeltop project worked to improve students’ access to education, entertainment, social networking and environmental controls through development of customised interfaces for portable devices.

Liz is looking forward to working with Karten Centre teams to support participation in the Nuvoic project. This will be an opportunity for people with dysarthric speech who are unable to use mainstream voice recognition systems to get involved in testing and improving more accessible voice control. Potential applications include voice output for communication with others, or to interact with existing voice-driven systems such as the Amazon Alexa and other smart-home devices. For more information see our featured article, or contact liz@karten-network.org.uk.

We were fortunate to have lots of lovely seasonal animations and stills for our 2019 Karten Network greeting.  As ever it was very difficult to decide on a winner as there is so much talent across our Karten Centres.

All entrants received a Certificate to thank them for their super work and creativity.  However, there could only be one winner, and I am delighted to congratulate Dick Eborn who attends The Grange Karten Centre in Bookham.  His animation and choice of music are charming and capture the spirit of the festive season perfectly.

Thank you Dick for spreading some Festive Cheer!

Trainees also performed a live piece of music that they had produced for their Duke of Edinburgh Award.  The Ian Karten Charitable Trust provided funding to establish Lakeside Printing at The Hamlet, The Earl was very interested in the Karten Centre and the work-related opportunities available to trainees.

Introducing Max Bianconi

Max Bianconi

My name is Massimiliano (Max) Bianconi. I have been working in social care since 2001, accumulating the experience and knowledge that I now use to support others.

I am passionate about social justice and empowering people to live a more independent and purposeful life.

I teach older and disabled people every day IT skills to give them confidence and competence in today’s technological world.

I love to spend time with my family outdoors, climb a cliff when I have the chance and make short videos and films.

I am delighted to join the Karten Network board, and I am looking forward to sharing my know-how in using mainstream technology to make a difference for older and disabled people.

Introducing Paul Doyle

Posted on October 11, 2019 at 12:53 pm.

Written by martin

Paul Doyle

My name is Paul Doyle. I have had the privilege of working in the field of Assistive Technology (AT) for 25 years.

My experience of AT ranges from installing and commissioning environmental control systems for the NHS to managing a multi-centre assessment service providing assessments for students eligible for the Disabled Students Allowance (DSA).

Throughout my career in the AT industry a common and recurring theme has been a lack of formal, accredited education and training for individuals working with AT and users of AT.

Experience has taught me that no matter how good an item of AT is. If it is not implemented and supported effectively by competent and confident teachers’ carers parents etc. the user will not gain the full benefit and of often will abandon their technology.

I have a passion for ensuring that an individual has access to products and services that genuinely enable independence and have been involved in several projects developing leaning programmes for individuals supporting users of AT.

I have been fortunate enough to be involved with industry and Government groups who are charged with representing and promoting AT at a national policy level.

I have also had opportunities to participate in numerous research and development projects with innovative organisations and individuals, this has helped me keep abreast of developments in an ever-changing field and establish interesting and rewarding relationships both in and outside the AT domain.

I very much welcome an opportunity to offer my knowledge, skills and just as importantly my enthusiasm to the Karten Network.

I hope to work with the Karten Network to expand on their offer to the community. For example, I have been collaborating with the Smart Home Industry for a many years and during that period I have learned of many benefits smart technologies can deliver to older and disabled people.

I see the Karten Centres as an ideal venue for an awareness raising programme, demonstrating smart products and highlighting their features and benefits to users in a supportive and ethical environment.

I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of a national organisation that at its core improves the lot of individuals and look forward to learning how best I can contribute to its future success.
