Welcome to our Winter Newsletter! There’s lots of super stuff in this edition of our Karten Newsletter, we hope you enjoy reading it. I absolutely love this time of year, we’ve nearly made it through the working year and most of us are looking forward to some quality downtime with our nearest and dearest over the Christmas and New Year period. Whatever you are doing the Karten team wish you all the very best for Christmas and the New Year. We’re looking forward to working with you in 2020.
We are introducing an application form which will be required for funding applications. I have added a link to the form that should be used by existing Karten Centres, along with the SpreadSheet template that forms part of your application. The application deadline for the next Trustees’ meeting is 12 noon on 17 January 2020. The completed application form and associated documents should be emailed to dawn@karten-network.org.uk. Please advise me at the earliest opportunity if you are thinking of developing an application for the next meeting.
I hope you enjoy reading our Autumn Newsletter and like me you are inspired by the breadth of activities going on across our amazing Network. The real spirit of Networking is evident in this newsletter with contributions from individuals, organisations, suppliers and services and all with the aim of improving standards for people with additional needs.
There is so much going on, I urge you and your colleagues to engage as much as you can with network opportunities. Are you registered for the TechAbility Conference: Raising Standards? Are you involved with our Special Interest Groups showcasing best practice with Digital Design and Manufacture & Voice Activated Technologies? And what about the VoiceItt beta programme testing project? Would you like to loan a 3D printer free of charge? If you answered yes – great! If the answer was no and you want to find out more get in touch with us, our contact details can be found at the end of the newsletter. There are significant benefits in working collaboratively, if there is an area that you need support with please let us know as there is every chance we’ll be able to help.
Based on feedback from colleagues in some of our Karten Centres, we are re-launching the Mobile Technology Resource (MTR). Special thanks to Martin Pistorius for leading on this and for contributions from Stuart Beveridge (seescape) and Carrie Sant (FitzRoy). We really need your input to grow this resource, details of how are included in the MTR article.
In this edition, we extend a very warm welcome to two new Karten Network Board Directors Paul Doyle and Max Bianconi. We also celebrate the creation of two Karten Centres, ROC College, Part of United Response and St Helen’s CDP Buzz Hub. We are delighted to welcome them all to our Karten Family!
I hope you enjoy the articles in our summer issue. In this edition we have a great mix of news from Karten Centres, details of products from Assistive Technology suppliers and resources that I thought would be of interest to you.
The Karten team has had a busy few months visiting Karten Centres, supporting Centres with applications for additional equipment, supporting the work of Special Interest Groups, attending and exhibiting Assistive Technology events, developing our website functionality and much, much more!
We continue to work with TechAbility who deliver a programme of consultancy visits, webinars & events and develop AT specific resources. TechAbility activity is delivered specifically to develop capacity, confidence and staff skills in Assistive Technology in order to raise standards and improve outcomes for the people you support. All resources and most of the events and support can be accessed by Karten Centres free of charge. Check out the website https://www.techability.org.uk/ Access all webinar recordings on demand on the TechAbility YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlQNUqK0ICK7tEd8rGaBmFUF5Lu4yyH-p
There will be a session on the programme just for Karten Centres providing you with the opportunity to Network with staff working in other centres. Save the date!
Finally, may I wish you all the very best for a lovely summer.

Hello Everyone! I can hardly believe we are already into April and hurtling towards our Spring Break. It’s been an exciting year so far for the Karten Network with some incredible achievements in our Centres, I hope you enjoy and are inspired by the articles within this Newsletter.
Trustees met towards the end of March 2019 and awarded grants to a number of centres for additional equipment. There were some really interesting applications and it was good to see Virtual Reality featuring in two of them. A new Karten Centre was established at Boveridge College in Dorset, so I would like to extend a warm welcome to the Karten Network to them.
Webinar recordings
A reminder that TechAbility Webinar recordings can be accessed from the link below. The recordings are really useful to support staff training and development activities.
The 2019 TechAbility Conference will be held on 21st November at the Rowton Hotel in Birmingham. As part of a very full programme of events there will be a specific Karten Network slot and lots of opportunities to Network.
Coming soon ….
We are currently planning a series of pilot Karten Events for the people you support. More details to follow, but essentially they will be mini-conferences to enable Karten Centre beneficiaries to get together and share their experiences. The first event will be held on 12 June and will be hosted by Jewish Care.
Can the people you support be the public face of the Karten Network?
