Homefield College

Services/focus of the Karten Centre

Following a successful bid from the Karten Trust, we established Sip & Surf in Loughborough Town Centre in 2010, comprising of an internet cafe, print shop and eBay enterprise. This was a great work experience opportunity for students and we were well-received by members of the public for our great rates and friendly service. Due to a number of external factors, Sip & Surf sadly closed down in August 2020.

So that our students would not miss out on the vital opportunities Sip & Surf provided, we opened a new enterprise called Breward's Coffee Shop in Mountsorrel, whilst moving all of the specialist digital media and printing equipment to our Vocational Centre. Here, students can print, scan and photocopy, along with printing a wide range of personalised gifts such as mugs, mouse matts, posters and canvases. We can also design and print leaflets and business cards. Graphic design is a core subject at the Vocational Centre and students make use of the eqipment provided by Karten to make original artwork and transfer these pieces onto items for sale.

Through the equipment provided, students from Homefield gain skills such as:
- Independence skills
- Transferable work skills
- ICT skills
- English, maths and communication skills
- Graphic design skills
