Services/focus of the Karten Centre

Sip and Surf is an Internet cafe, print shop and ebay enterprise set up by Homefield College after a successful bid from the Karten Trust. The Internet cafe has computers and wifi for members of the public to use as well as offering printing, scanning and photocopying services. Customers can also enjoy a range of hot and cold drinks. The print shop sell many different personalised gifts such as mugs and mouse matt's as well as posters and canvases. As well as these gifts the print shop also design and print leaflets and business cards. The ebay enterprise sells items on to ebay that have been donated to us.
Students from Homefield college work in all three areas of the business to gain skills such as:
- Independence skills
- Transferable work skills
- ICT skills
- English, maths and communication skills

Centre Established

Our students are young adults, usually between the ages of 18 and 21. Our students attend Homefield College between 3 and 5 days a week on educational study programmes.


We cater for students with a range a learning disabilities and difficulties. Many of our students are on the autistic spectrum.

Assistive Technology

We us ipads for students who find a desk top computer difficult to use. We also offer students the option of lower or higher case keyboards. We use tracker mice for students with physical difficulties. We also have Widgit software used to make resources for students with communication difficulties. Our Clevertouch interactive touch screen is also an excellent way of making a desktop computer more accessible.

We have 3 full time staff and 1 part time domestic staff.

We are open from 9am to 4pm Monday to Saturday.
