An e-Safety survey was carried out in November 2011 across the Independent Specialist Colleges (ISCs) involved with the East Midlands PRD Group LSIS funded E-Safety project.
The aim of the survey was to:
- gain an overview of perceptions and experience of e-Safety in an ISC;
- inform development of training materials for staff and parents and carers and resources for learners.
Another survey will be carried out in January 2013 to help measure the impact of the project and related resources. This page will be updated once the results of both surveys have been collated and analysed.
Three set of questionnaires were used, one set for each group of students, staff and parent and carers.

The questionnaires covered broadly three themes across each group:
- what access to activities and technologies have at college and at home;
- understanding of e-Safety and the risks and implications for learners;
- knowledge of what the colleges do in terms of policies, procedures and training;
Interim Recommendations
- Colleges to work closely with parents/carers and other stakeholders as to policy, strategy and training – there needs to be a consistent e-Safety message to learners;
- Staff and parents and carers to understand the technology and activities learners are engaging with;
- Terminology to be addressed – for all stakeholders; E-Safety; E-Safety Policy, AUP, AUP agreement alongside technical terminology;
- Staff to understand and practice their own e-Safety;
- E-safety training to be compulsory for all staff; should be assessed and using an accredited course;
- College should have an e-Safety CPD strategy with clear impact evaluation;
- E-Safety triangle – staff need to understand how their practice and the use of technology sits alongside legal and policy aspects i.e it is not sufficient to know a bit about e-Safety;
- E-Safety should be embedded in all learning and teaching practice.
- Risk assessment to be a priority and on an individual basis. Once the risk assessment is carried out then a clear plan is needed to move it forward;
- E-Safety and related policies need an impact assessment.
